Series: Practical Wisdom in a Godless World

Discussion Questions:

  1. What is the force of the opening words of 1:19 (“Know this…”)?

  2. Who is James addressing in this section? (1:19)

  3. What are the three imperatives in 1:19? Reflect on your life. Are you quick to hear/listen? Are you slow to speak? Are you slow to anger?

  4. Is there a difference between anger that serves the righteousness character of God and anger that doesn’t? Give some examples of each.

  5. How does James use the word “anger” in this passage?

  6. What is the root of all sinful anger? What is the root of all sinful speech?

  7. James identifies internal sin and external sin in 1:21. What habits or items in your life impact your heart and soul that could be described as “filthy.”? Internal sin inevitably leads to external sin (wickedness). What areas in your life could be a result of internal sin that manifests itself in behavior?

  8. What is the solution as offered by James?

Applications:

  1. Anger is a sin of the heart, and it manifests itself in behavior. It often shows up in our speech which is also a mirror of our heart.

  2. Why is the Bible the only reliable source to root out of our hearts filthiness and the resulting behavior, wickedness? Read Heb. 4:12-13
