Call to Worship: Psalm 95:1-3
Confession of Faith: The Apostles’ Creed
Hymns and Psalter Selections:

  1. #212 Come, Thou Almighty King

  2. #538 Take My Life, and Let It Be

  3. #404 The Church’s One Foundation

Sermon: Acts 6:1-7

Discussion Questions:

  1. What is the immediate concern in the context of the passage?

  2. Specifically, what is the complaint?

  3. How was the complaint handled? Who is involved?

  4. The potential for an ungodly response to the complaint is possible. What might some of those have been?

  5. The aspotles respond in a godly manner. How? Be specific.

  6. What qualities were considered when choosing the men to handle the complaint?

  7. Why was it necessary for these men to be elected to the office of deacon and how does that help grow and mature the church? (See 6:7).

Applications:

  1. God made man body and soul. Therefore he cares about both. The physical needs of the church and her members are important. They are not to be dismissed.

  2. If the elders are saddled with the physical needs of the church, other things will suffer. A healthy church has godly elders and godly deacons.

  3. A church without godly deacons will result in a weakness in the teaching and preaching of the Word. Christ cares deeply for his church to ensure that both items are addressed and cared for within the life of his people.
