Daily Prayer for the Lord's Day, February 23, 205: Luke 13:1-5
There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:1-5, ESV)
Prayer: Our Father, too often, we are overly inquisitive about matters pertaining to your divine and secret providence. Too frequently, we pry into the hidden counsels of your will and try to resolve issues that affect the human condition. We wrestle with wars, calamities, horrible weather events, and other disasters by asking the wrong questions. Instead of heeding the words of your Son, we try to unscrew the inscrutable. For who has known the mind of the Lord? Who has been your counselor? Instead, Father, please help us to see those terrible events and the dark providences of our lives and repent and seek your face, or we, like many, will perish. Father, we know we are weak people. Therefore, we ask the wrong questions. As creatures of dust, we want to see the end from the beginning and make sense of things that bewilder our minds and leave us wondering. Instead, Lord, please help us repent, or we will perish. Please use those dark providences to move us to godliness and holiness. Please use the calamities of this life to stand in awe of you and turn and be saved. Only a fool tries to resolve what is known only to you. Only a fool refuses to heed the call of dark providences and repent of sin. Only a fool behaves that way. Please, Father, we do not wish to be fools. We do not want to be lost. Instead, please help us see that you give life and take it. Unless we repent, we will likewise perish. Please help us, for Christ's sake. Amen.
